"Brain memory," what is it? Of course, the more times that you repeat something, the more times those particular neurons fire, making the experience much easier to recall.

Several different types of memory will be discussed in further pages. For right now, let's take a look at short-term memory and long-term memory.

SHORT-TERM MEMORY

This memory stays with us only as long as we need it. As example is an appointment that we only need to meet one time.

Short-term memory is a working memory that relies on an action plan. You use that action plan in conjunction with the summoning of information from the "storage area" of your brain. You combine these two to perform the action necessary.

For example, you have an appointment at 3 p.m. Your short-term memory remembers the appointment while your brain decides on the plan to get into the car and drive to the location of the appointment. The memory also determines how long the drive will take based on the recall of past experiences of driving that distance, then arriving at a final decision and course of action to take.

LONG-TERM MEMORY

Long-term memory, in contrast, can be recalled years or even decades later. The address of your childhood home may be such a memory. In between these memory extremes, we have many medium-term memories, which may last months or years and finally fade away.

Many factors determine whether an experience or item of knowledge is destined to be a short-term brain memory or a long-term brain memory. These include their emotional content, novelty, and the amount of effort that we make to practice recalling them.
